Primary Pupils Numeracy Challenge and B&Q donate plants

We had many visitors to the garden last week.  Twenty three primary-7 pupils came to the Academy for a numeracy day...
...they measured for new raised beds...
...marking the corners with coloured disks.
They learned about Pythagoras's theorem...

...which tells us that the diagonals should be exactly the same  if our rectangle is truly square!
It is easy to think the lengths are all correct but some adjustment was needed to ensure the raised bed was not going to be a parallelogram.
Checking and double checking will save work later on because if they are out of square our paving slabs won't fit in for the paths!
This is where the new raised beds will be soon.
Later in the day, they did the orienteering challenge around the school site...
...additional mathematical questions were posted rather than ones about compost!
In other news, B&Q have kindly donated some timber, pots & seed trays...
...and two trolley loads of plants!  They are ones that were being sold off but just need some TLC to revive them.  We can use them for hanging baskets as well as planting out in the garden beds.
Thanks to Ian Barclay who organised this.  He also visited the garden and was impressed with all we have achieved.  It is great to have the support of B&Q Peterhead store behind us!

Meanwhile, we've been mulching the "long border",
weeding and planting...
...continuing with the paving...
...we now have wheelchair access from the gate to the patio and right up to the fruit cage so cause for celebration!
The S3 science class planted out their sunflowers
We had to keep up with weeds...
...and keep seedlings watered in the poly-tunnel.
Space is at a premium in there as we bring on plants for the hanging baskets...
...whilst also planting crops directly into the beds.
The peas and beans are looking good outside...
...and the seeds that Jessica sowed have now germinated!
All the potatoes have been earthed up - both in bags and the raised beds.
The EAGer bunch potted up sweet corn and tomato seedlings
whilst comfrey leaves were chopped up ready for the comfrey tube!
We took out the crocus pots now they have died back and refilled the plant theatres with geraniums.

A little helper enjoyed filling some hanging baskets
Also, thanks to Miss Patrigeon in the ASL department for donating plants from her garden.  We have filled the corner of this bed...
...and still have more to plant out!
We have also started to construct a notice board near the entrance to the garden.  We will use it to display news and articles plus a list of all the local and international companies that have helped us in our garden project to date.

Huge Thanks to Aubin Group and folks at the County Depot

Last Thursday Jim and Michal from the Ellon branch of Aubin Group delivered a shiny new 1000L tank for us to use as a water butt.  This will help with watering at the far end of the garden where we are starting to establish more plants.  They have kindly donated it having liked the sound of the garden we are building here...thank you Jim and Michal!

The day before, we were also donated a large quantity of wood chips from the County Roads Department Depot to use as a mulch on the raised beds.  This will keep down weeds and help retain moisture in the soil.  So thank you to Willie and everyone there!  They have also pledged a couple of benches for us to restore - we will be rescuing them from the rubbish tip! :)
In other news, Euan filled the nettle tube to start making liquid plant feed
Michael got cracking with the watering and mulching
and our volunteer Liz forged ahead with linking the patio to the entrance path.  This meant a lot more paving; back-breaking work so a big thank you to her too! :)

Work Continues as Spring Arrives

Miss Swallow collected a trailer load of supplies to help with seed sowing and for making bean wigwams.
She couldn't resist a couple of pepper plants at the same time!  One sweet, one chilli - they are doing well inside the poly-tunnel.
Our volunteer Liz assembled two raised growing troughs
They will be good for anyone in a wheelchair to be able to reach and plant up.
The big news this week is that we started work on a new patio area.  Here, wooden edging is being laid down at a width of ten slabs.
We laid sand (with a little helper to tread it down)...
After tamping down the sand with a long length of timber, we laid the first row.
Back-breaking work but we made good progress.
More slabs were delivered...
...more sand...
...and timbers too.
Euan helped to get it perfect...
...and we are very pleased with the finished product!
Meanwhile Michael helped with the hebe hedge and watered the plants in...
...and seeds are germinating in the poly-tunnel
Sweet peas show their heads above the soil.
We have had a pleasant 15 to 20 degrees outside this week...
and generally ten degrees warmer inside the poly-tunnel! :)
Salad crops, onions and herbs are coming on nicely.  The ASDAN group continued to pot on bedding plants ready for hanging baskets...
...and the EAGer bunch (Jakob, Joy, Kiera) planted out broad bean plants...
...whilst Jessica sowed seeds into a raised bed.
Meanwhile Jakob, Darren, Lewis and Dougal returned to help sow seeds into trays
We will bring these on in the poly-tunnel before planting them outside in several weeks time.
The broad beans were watered in.  Also this week, Mark helped paint boards for information signs to go on, and Liam came out to check and weed his plants.
We also sold some cut herbs to staff and cropped our first radishes - tasty!
