National Gardening Week 2026

This week has been National Gardening Week.  It’s been wonderful weather and we have been busy both inside and outside.  Today (Friday) the library closed at lunchtime and folks came out to help weed the Memorial garden.

Throughout the week, we have had a “Guess the seeds in the jar” competition - the winner is Hannah S with a guess if 1087 - closest to the actual 2,011 seeds!

On Tuesday lunchtime, we held a “Sunflower Seed competition”.  Folks paid £1 and planted a seed in a pot.  We will look after them, plant them out and measure them at the end of the season to see which grows the tallest.

Also, to celebrate gardening through the week, there have been daily facts in the bulletin and interesting posters around the school.  Look out for them in the garden if you visit as we will be putting them on display there.

In outdoor news, we have been extremely busy:

Stimming and mowing

Sweeping and tidying

Planting onions and potatoes

Wood-chipping

Weeding

Refilling water bottles

Playing and having fun!

Harvesting rhubarb - thanks to all those who bought bunches.

Sowing seeds

Planting seedlings

Washing all the chairs

Fixing our “tippy tap”

Finding a toad under our weed barrier!

And a special shout-out to Kody who has helped with a trip to the skips with rubbish!

He has also made a new plant stand for us…

… a comfy bench

…and has been painting a bigger bench to go into the Memorial Garden.

Our Complex Needs group also visit regularly to keep things watered and sow seeds.

A few weeks ago, we also had a special visitor.  Tracy McCormack hopes to coordinate a community group of supported adults to help regularly in the garden.  It would be wonderful to welcome them and see them here.

We also have Gordon Park nursery children who have adopted a growing bed and trough and love visiting to grow their own veg and flowers.
