National Gardening Week DAY 1

National Gardening Week had a positive start with a delivery...

...of slabs first thing this morning

Miss Swallow also rescued a set of pallet shelving from the county depot...
...and Michael quickly set to cutting some more shelves for it.  We will use it to tidy our "shed extension" to store pots in :)
Michael also worked hard moving the timbers for the polytunnel classroom into position at the other end of the garden.

Our volunteer group arrived for their morning's work and got straight on with weeding...

...at both ends of the garden!
Next, the S3 class were checking out cuttings taken last autumn and potting them on.
Small leylandii cuttings now have large established roots to grow well this year.
Some had red nodules ready for roots to grow once they are put into more nutritious potting compost.
Sitting in a tray of water to wet the compost from below.
We also had new "free" hardy geranium plants from the root cuttings taken last autumn...
...and our cornus stem cuttings have taken root and are producing healthy shoots above ground.
During lunch Ross put food and sawdust into the RIDAN hot composter and gave it a good mix.  The temperature of the mixture was 55 degrees centigrade!

Also during lunch, we had staff volunteers weeding the "long border"...
...and the cordon fruit trees.
Drinks, healthy snacks and a few biscuits and cakes for energy were available!
A little helper called by to join in too.
In the afternoon, the two door frames for the polytunnel classroom were assembled...
...trenches were dug...
...and the frames buried in position and fixed to the metal frame.
Perfectly level :)
Meanwhile our plant signs are looking great now they are out in the borders.

The rhubarb is ready to start cropping

The plant theatres are looking colourful...

...with pansies and dwarf narcissi...

...as is the long border.

Our "step-over" fruit trees are budding (this one is a pear)

The paths had a great sweep thanks to Ellon Resource Centre folks this morning...

...and they did a particularly good weeding job here!

Also last Wednesday, the S1 class worked really hard...

...forking over the wild flower area ready to sow seeds soon.

There will be regular updates this week as National Gardening Week progresses so please return to see how we all get on.  Happy gardening!  Also, don't forget you are welcome to come and test out a deck chair too just to enjoy and take it all in!

All hands on deck!

This week has seen a new poly-tunnel frame take shape!  This will be our outdoor classroom for working in breezy or drizzly weather.  Thanks to our volunteer Liz for getting stuck in with it.
With a concerted effort, all the metal work has now been completed.
A huge thank you goes to Dave at the council depot who gave us a trailer of shredded bark...
ready to mulch the borders next week.
The sun has continued to shine (between April hail showers!) ...
and the daffodils & tulips are looking great.
Thanks to S5 pupil Mark for helping to build a new raised bed along the fence...
...and to Euan for raising up the edges of the beds in the poly-tunnel.
Meanwhile the EAGer bunch sowed more seeds on Friday (runner beans, climbing beans and courgettes)
Kiera refilled all the clean bird feeders...
...and Ross cleared the broccoli plants from the polytunnel (the birds have had the best of these!)
Seeds are germinating well...

...and this week, Miss T had lots in her produce box: cabbage, broccoli, rhubarb, parsley, leeks, carrots, kale and beetroot!

Next week it is NATIONAL GARDENING WEEK so everyone is invited to come out to enjoy the garden - either to help with jobs or just relax in a deckchair between showers!  Our bird boxes are in use so there'll be bird song plus there is lots of colour to enjoy as the borders start to blossom so hope to see you there!

Spring at last!

At last the sun is shining and spring flowers are blossoming!
Last Thursday, the Interact Group came out to see their lovely crocuses in flower.  They have looked fabulous in the plant theatres on the shed and are helping to spread the message to End Polio.  Above you can see (left to right): Mrs Moir (teacher), Mrs Gordon (Rotarian) and pupils Alice, Adam and Michael.

Another visitor last week was P7 pupil Grant who loves working outdoors and got stuck right in to help clear the weeds from the unmade path ready for our boys to get laying slabs again soon.  Thank you Grant and see you this week too!

The Ellon Resource Centre group also swung by to see how things are going with a view to starting up their weekly work sessions too.  The weather was lovely so they too stayed for an hour or so and helped weed, water and sweep paths so everything started to feel tidier immediately :)
Meanwhile on Friday the EAGer Bunch started sowing pumpkin seeds...
...and Kiera gave the bird feeders a good clean out to prevent the spread of disease.
The S1 pupils started sowing vegetable seeds into trays...
...and cropped some of the last carrots (multicoloured - white, purple and orange) for our staff produce boxes.
